South Cheshire Honey Show
South Cheshire Branch Honey Show at Nantwich Show, 29th July 2009
Once again, the weather did just about all it could to stop the Nantwich Show. The setting-up day is frantically busy, with all sorts and sizes of vehicles coming onto the showground to deliver livestock and the many stands. By the afternoon, the metal roadways were floating on a sea of mud which oozed up at the edges whenever a vehicle went along. Nevertheless, there was an impressive show, the rain held off on the day—at first— and the crowds came (although many had to be towed out of the parking field at the end.
The bee stand was again one of the most popular and busy for the whole day, with our excellent stewards constantly answering questions from fascinated visitors.
The Honey Show itself provided an impressive display of bee-products. With 140 entries, it was not far off the record of 149 (set in 2005). The judges reported a high standard in all classes.
Frank Hilder (ex president of the CBKA) presented the prizes and expressed thanks to out-going Show Manager, Steve Guest, for organising the show. Steve will hand over to John Goodwin after next year.
It is largely thanks to Steve that the Branch Honey Show was revived four years ago and incorporated into the Nantwich Show. He has worked indefatigably over the years to build up the show, and is still not satisfied! Nantwich Show organisers are very supportive to us, and it seems clear that we could do even better, both in the number, and in the quality of entries. Steve quoted a novice competitor as saying “Winning a prize is not difficult!”
Apart from the prize winners pictured, Bob Burns won the Cynthia Chadwick Trophy and the Anderlotte Shield.
